Difficulties in determining the proper relations between religion and politics continuously provoke heated debate within American politics. This course examines a variety of philosophic approaches to the problem. We begin with a careful consideration of the classical liberal democratic solution of separating church and state, and then turn to a variety of contemporary alternatives - from moderate revisions to radical criticisms. Prerequisite: Cannot be taken after Political Science 270. (Not offered 2008-09.) 1 unit.
