This course examines various ideas of the meaning and purpose of communities throughout the history of western political thought. Beginning with Greek conceptions of what it means to live together, we will consider how the definition and purpose of community evolves to the contemporary period. Consideration of contemporary efforts to recover idyllic communities will also be considered as part of the continuing effort on the part of human beings to link personal and political practices.
