New technologies such as electric cars, LED lighting, and alternative supplies are forcing us as individuals and as a society to make choices that will have a profound effect on shaping the future. To aid in making informed choices this course explores the fundamental principles necessary to understand energy: its nature, types, production, transportation, storage, conversion, measurement, and use. We examine new technologies in such areas as biological processes, nanomaterials, solar cells, and battery technology and discuss how these will widen our choices. There will be a combination of virtual and physical labs. Each student will select a company and report on the likely impact of its ongoing research and emerging products.
