Course Level: Undergraduate/Graduate Long-hailed as the paradigmatic successful state after the country was lifted out of poverty at the end of World War II, the recession of the 1990s called into question the viability of the Japanese model. However, more than a lost decade, the economic downturn brought far-reaching changes affecting all areas of Japanese politics, economics, and society. This course studies the evolution of core Japanese institutions, discusses the politics behind recent reforms, and the challenges of internationalism. Usually offered every spring.
