Rotating topics in comparative perspectives on the interrelationships of cultural and linguistic patterns in different societies. Case studies focus on language variation and pluralism as related to verbal creativity, social hierarchies, gender diversity, language history, and colonialism and nation building. Usually offered alternate summers. Prerequisite: one course in anthropology or linguistics, or permission of instructor.
