This is a survey course devoted to literary production of Central America during the twentieth century. We will begin the course by situating Spanish American Modernism and its relation to cultural production at the beginning of the twentieth century. Our analysis of Modernism will focus primarily on collections of poetry. After completing our study of Modernism, we will explore a series of novels which foreground cultural problems at the national level as well as aesthetic innovations. Prerequisite: SPN 3103, Introduction to Literature and SPN 3113, Advanced Grammar and Composition, or instructor's permission.
