Fall (4 credits), Spring (4 credits). An introduction to close critical reading of texts in several genres and to argument about literary texts. Students will attend to the characteristics and effects of literary language, and will explore varieties of form, structure, style, and genre. They will also be introduced to a basic vocabulary of literary critical terms. Prerequisite: one 100-level literature class or comparable first-year seminar or permission.
