Traces the development of mathematics through two major periods: before the seventeenth century, when mathematics was more formal and intuitive in its approach, and after the seventeenth century, when the approach became more rigorous. Emphasis on Greek and Hindu-Arabic mathematics in the early period and on the development of analytic geometry, calculus, and related concepts in the later period. Brief biographies of some of the great mathematicians and discussion of some of the famous problems. IV
