Traces the development of mathematics through two major periods: before the seventeenth century, when mathematics was more formal and intuitive in its approach, and after the seventeenth century, when the approach became more rigorous. Emphasis on Greek and Hindu-Arabic mathematics in the early period and on the development of analytic geometry, calculus, and related concepts in the later period.
