A critical study of buildings and their urban environments beginning with Europe and the U.S. in the second half of the nineteenth century and ending with a selection of global productions today. Emphasizes the social, economic, and political forces that have shaped architecture and cities and investigates some of the theories that underlay their form and meaning. Topics include: the architect as philosopher-builder, critical reception of buildings and city design, new technologies and architectural form, and issues of modern vs. postmodern.
