First course of the four-course sequence for Biology and Environmental Science majors intended to develop critical thinking skills in science. Introduces cell biology and genetics. Also considers concepts important in contemporary society. Laboratory is required and involves the inquiry method and a research component. Three lecture hours and one 2-hour lab per week. Offered fall semester. Prerequisite: CHEM 110 or 111 or taken concurrently.
