Surveys American literature from the pre-contact period to the Civil War, focusing on how significant literary and diverse cultural texts from this period reflect the struggles of a growing nation. Students will read and analyze indigenous creation stories, exploration accounts, autobiographies, sermons, diaries, letters, public documents, and other narratives, frequently paired in order to discover alternate viewpoints.
