Readings in Greek and Roman short verse form (Archilochos, Sappho, Alkaios, Catullus, Horace, Martial, etc.); an examination of the subject matter of short poems (lamentation, longing, passion, and dead parrot) as well as some occasions for song (lullabies, harvest, drinking, weddings); a look at parallels in 20th-century American song and verse.
