The course begins with the fourth-century Early Christian era, covers the Gothic period, and ends with the early years of the Northern Renaissance in the 16th century. Students study a wide variety of paintings (including mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, tapestries, and stained glass), sculpture (Viking wood carvings, Celtic goldsmithwork, and French and German church statuary), and architecture (Early Christian basilicas, Romanesque churches, and Gothic cathedrals).
