Overlapping political and ecological political boundaries, valuable resources, and indigenous politics combine to make the Arctic region an important area in international affairs. The impact of global climate change is creating new conflicts while exacerbating old ones. This course explores the linkages among the areas bordering the Arctic while discussing the political economy of resource use such as fisheries, oil drilling, mining, reindeer herding, whaling, sealing, and polar bears. Students explore the actors in the area - Canada, Greenland, Norway, Alaska, Sweden, Russia, and their respective indigenous populations - and study efforts to increase international cooperation in the area.
