This course introduces students to lyric poetry written in the last two centuries, and in varied cultural settings, from the "canonical" English and American classics to the contemporary, multicultural, and transnational. Poets studied may include Meena Alexander, Agha Shahid Ali, T. S. Eliot, Allen Ginsberg, Audre Lorde, John Keats, Cathy Song, Wallace Stevens, Rabindranath Tagore, Walt Whitman, William Wordsworth, W. B. Yeats, and others. The focus is on "close reading" with some attention to the poets' varied historical and sociocultural contexts. Students will have opportunities to attend live poetry readings and to write their own poems. Not open to students who have received credit for First-Year Seminars 323. Enrollment limited to 25. L.
