Prerequisites: Education 201, 202. Examines the relevant research base on literacy acquisition and a variety of pedagogical approaches based on competing theories about literacy. Looks at culturally responsive pedagogy with children from a variety of racial, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, and at the knowledge, skills, and attitudes involved with the program processes. Requires development, implementation, and assessment of lesson plans. Field experience includes observation and teaching in public school classrooms. Shanton.
