Develops skill at diagnosing literacy needs through formal and informal assessments and planning research-based instruction. Twice-weekly tutorial sessions with struggling emergent readers in an offcampus laboratory setting. Emphasizes importance of readers' cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Opportunities for mentoring by faculty. (Requires permission of the instructor). learning processes. Published teacher research projects are reviewed. Examines teacher research as a strategy to build collaboration in schools and to strengthen the professional role of teachers particularly in program evaluation and assessment. Fulfills core requirement in research. Prerequisite: EDU 540 or its equivalent in another discipline.
