Survey of linguistic theory and first- and second-language acquisition research. Analyzes a speaker's unconscious knowledge of language by examining the structure of English and other languages. Follows the development of this knowledge in infants, children, and adults. Considers the sociopolitical context of becoming and being bilingual. Prerequisite: HDP 120/122-121/123 or HDP 124/126- 125/127. Advanced. Offered in conjunction with HDF 532.
