The tension between language and music will be explored in terms of various theories of and programs for setting words to music. The interpretive qualities of recitation, setting and performance will be studied and whenever possible, rehearsed. Selected works of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Mahler will be examined as well as the poets Goethe, Eichendorff, Heine and M?ike. This course will be cross-listed in the German Department.
