Surveys the history of the Middle East from 1800- 1992. Major themes in the nineteenth century include the internal reform efforts under Ottoman and Egyptian regimes; European military, political, economic, and cultural intervention; the evolution of new paradigms in politics and society; and the emergence of Islamic modernist and reform intellectuals and movements. In the 20th century, this course will focus on the rise of nationalism; WWI and the partition of the region; the settlement and establishment of Israel; independence movements and the establishment of nationalist states; globalization and industrialization; Islamic social and potitical movements; the Arab-Israeli conflict; and European and American intervention in the postcolonial period.
