An advanced course that provides an introduction to Cuban culture while maintaining and improving Spanish language skills. The course is designed to give students an overview of the evolution of Cuban culture and society from the colonial times to the present, with emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. Readings include novels, short stories, plays, poetry, essays and historical sources. Some of the authors that will be considered are José María Heredia, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda,José Martí, Nicolás Guillén, Lydia Cabrera, AleCarpentier, Fidel Castro, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Lourdes Casal, Nancy Morejón and Dolores Prida.
