Surveys Islamic history from 600s C.E. to the end of the 18th century. Begins with the late-antique world of the Byzantine and Sasanian empires and progresses to the life of Muhammad, the establishment of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates, political disintegration during the Crusader and Mongol invasions, and the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
