Male and female Victorians were obsessed with "the Woman Question" in employment, educationand other public and private areas. Upper-, middleand working-class Victorians wondered about the effects that both industrialization and the abolition of slavery in British colonies would have on traditional relations among social classes and races. This course will examine Victorian literature that explores ideas about women's role and sexuality as well as literature that focuses on new kinds of work and the concerns about class that arose from the changes of industrialism.
