By introducing students to the poetry, prose, drama, and culture of the late 17th century and early 18th century, this course examines the enormous political, social and literary changes that occur with the advent of modern Great Britain. We will read more traditional authors such as Swift, Rochester, Dryden and Pope, as well as recently "discovered" authorslike Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Anne Finch, and Aphra Behn. We will look at Pepys's accounts of England during fire, plague and political upheaval; explore the emergence of modern journalism in Addison, Steel and Haywood; and read travel narratives that will help bring into focus British encounters-and responses to encounters-withthe cultures and people of the Americas, the Near East, India and the Pacific Islands.
