This course examines the historical traditions and cultural diversity of the Latin American region. Particular attention is given to the creation and expression of regional "popular" cultures byconsidering: ethnicity, gender, social stratification, mass media, religious change,"peasant" societiesand social movements. We discuss these topics in a wider sociopolitical context of colonialism, nation-state formation, rural-urban relations and influences of globalization. (M.
