This course seeks to explore the various relationships between baseball and American culture, focusing on the role of business and baseball; the way in which baseball has been used to define boundaries for American identity, particularly along the lines of race, gender, and ethnicity; the uses to which baseball has been put within different art forms, including fictional literature, poetry, music, theater, and film; and how baseball has played a significant role in the creation and maintenance of print and broadcast media institutions. 3 cr.
