Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of English chair and A "C" or better in two100-level English classes and one literacy survey. This course will explore contemporary literacy and cultural studies. Students will read primary texts that have had a major influence on the interpretation of literature (Freud, Marx, and others), explore the development of major critical "schools" of thought, and learn to considertexts from a variety of perspectives. This course will have students study, share, and question contemporary approaches to literature and the literary term associated with those critical approaches, while also creating and sharing a close analysis of a particular literary work. 3 cr.
