This is an introductory course intended to help students with little background in the physical sciences to understand the material environment. Modern concepts of atomic and molecular structure are developed and used to explain the properties of familiar substances including solids, liquids, and gases. Laboratory work is designed to enhance understanding of fundamental concepts at the practical level and may include field sampling and demonstrations as well as individual experiments. Two class hours, three-hour lab. 3 cr. Laboratory fee $50.
