The purpose of this course is to provide students with an overview of the field of special education and a basic understanding of special education law, current policies, and best practices, including special education technology. Students learn about the etiology, identification, and characteristics of the 13 disabilities recognized under special education legislation. Emphasis is placed on classroom implications and teacher decision-making, as well as the professional attitudes and responsibilities related to providing inclusive educational practices. Prerequisite: successful completion of ED 100 and ED 242 or Department Chair approval.
