Slobodian This lecture course explores the uses and visions of the city in Europe since the mid-nineteenth century. The course covers both the histo-ry of modern urban planning and the responses to it-the way the city was designed and the way it was lived. We will begin by looking at differing theories of the city: Was it a place of freedom or increased control, especially for socially marginalized groups like women, colo-nized populations and the poor Was it an artifact of dominant social forces or a space for individual self-creation Themes we will cover include colonial urbanism, modernism, fascist city planning, suburbanization, tourism, migration and reclamations of urban space by social movements, squatters and youth subcultures.
