Respaut NOT OFFERED IN 2009-10. The addictive interplay between doctors and patients as reflected in a variety of nineteenth- and twentieth-century writings, and in photography and film. The course will investigate the effect of sickness on family structure and the struggle with illness as a desperate ?dancing with the beast,? touching on mental and physical suffering of various kinds-hysteria and alcoholism, child-birth and abortion, tuberculosis, cancer, AIDS-represented in novels and short stories from Barbey d'Aurevilly to Gide, in the reflections of historians and psychologists (Michelet, Charcot), and in biographies, personal accounts and autofictions by Guibert and Er naux.
