NOT OFFERED IN 2009-10. This course explores the complex history, politics, and cultures of the region that includes Mexico, Guatema-la, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, and Nicaragua. Critically examining diverse scholarship, we will examine ancient, colonial, and ?post-colonial? Mesoamerican civilizations, and their continuing influence on North American society. Topics include: the legacies of pre-Hispanic civilizations; colonization and conflict; indigenous identity and activism; political-economic changes; ethnicity and gender; and transnational flows of people, commodities, and ideas. Special attention is given to the Maya Area and to recent political and cultural activism in Chia-pas, Guatemala, and Mesoamerican enclaves in North America.
