NOT OFFERED IN 2009-10. This course is a sociological exploration of the lives of women in Caribbean societies. While the emphasis is on contemporary English-speaking Caribbean (e.g., Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Nevis), attention will be given to the historical background of the current situation and to the French-speaking (e.g., Martinique, Guadeloupe, Haiti) and Spanish-speaking (Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico) Caribbean. Women's work in the formal and informal sectors, activism, roles in develop-ment and familial relationships are some of the topics to be explored.
