Obeng An examination of African experience and expression of religion, the course surveys African religions among the Akan of Ghana, Yoruba of Nigeria, Nuer of the Sudan, the Zulu of South Africa, and the Bemazava-Sakalava of Madagascar. The course will focus on how gender, age, status, and cultural competence influence Africans' use of architecture, ritual, myth, dance, and music to communicate, elaborate on the cosmos, and organize their lives. Special attention will be paid to the resiliency of African deities and indigenous cultural media during their encounter with Christianity and Islam.
