Obeng Topic for 2009-10: Neglected Africans of the Diaspora. The seminar explores the nature and composition of the African Diaspora and its changing meanings. Focusing on Africans in India and Pakistan, Oman, Britain, Belize, Martinique, Ecuador, and Costa Rica, we will examine the sociocultural connections among diasporic Africans such as the forced migrations of enslaved Africans and voluntary emigra-tion of free-skilled Africans out of continental Africa. The seminar also explores the geopolitical, religious, and cultural factors that foster distinctive diasporic African identities and how these people constitute and contribute to global citizenry. Attention will be paid to the per-meable boundaries of global politics, religion, economics, culture, and citizenry.
