Newton, Crum, McDonough Introduction to the microbial world, with emphasis on bacteria and viruses and their activities in nature, using examples of how these mi-crobes influence human activity. Both medical and nonmedical applications, and useful (food production, genetic engineering) as well as harmful (disease, bioterrorism) consequences of microbes will be discussed along with consideration of biological principles and tech-niques characterizing the organisms.
