The objective of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the richness, diversity, and complex-ity of African societies and cultures while appreciating their unifying features. Topics to be discussed include forms of social organization, the importance of kinship and marriage systems, the centrality of religion, the position of women, urbanization and problems of develop-ment, democratization, and political transformation, political instability, and armed conflicts. In order to understand a people's view of themselves and of their relationship to the outside world, an in-depth case study will be made of one ethnic group-the Yoruba of south-western Nigeria .
