Through the study of selected French songs in a masterclass setting, students develop skills in analysis and interpretation and gain an understanding of the development of the Mélodie genre in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Student presentations, classroom discussions, and exercises in critical listening will address issues of text setting, lyric diction, performance practice, musical and dramatic interpretation, and important trends in musical and literary aesthetics.
