Study of compositional practice through model composition and analysis of selected techniques and procedures employed by composers in the second half of the 20th century. Topics include: Postwar serialism, indeterminancy, minimalism, and the quest for new sounds. Composers include: Varese, Cage, Messiaen, Boulez, Stock hausen, Crumb, Berio, Cowell, Carter, Ligeti, Reich, Brown, and others. Student compositions will be performed in class. Continuation of THYU 305. Prerequisite: THYU 202, 208. (3 credits) Sandler
