Political, social and economic history of the United States from its colonial heritage to the governmental crisis of Civil War and Reconstruction. Emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of identity as a nation, the development of a sense of legitimacy in the government, the expansion of participation in selecting the government, the extension of government services into the nation, and the distribution of wealth throughout the society in the United States from 1776 through 1877.
