An advanced course, COM 405 is designed as a seminar embracing an interdisciplinary approach to global communications and international relations. Particular attention is paid to issues surrounding human rights and the debates over the right to communicate. Specific topics covered in the seminar include interethnic communication, interpersonal skills in a multicultural environment, intercultural and ethnic minority media relations, theories of global communications, and communication in war and conflict. The underlying thrust of the seminar is the necessity for an understanding of cultural differences and a critical approach to the structure and relations of the media from a global perspective. Prerequisite: COM 304 and COM 305 or COM 306. 3 credits. Offered every Spring.
