This phase is the first component of in-the-field pre-hospital setting designed to allow progression of the paramedic student in advanced didactic and skills training, and progression towards eligibility to become licensed as a paramedic according to state and national regulations and will allow the paramedic student the clinical experience in the pre-hospital setting. This field internship is a period of direct supervised pre-hospital clinical experience on an advanced care vehicle, which provides the student with a progression of increasing patient care responsibilities, which proceeds from observation to working as a team member. After progressing through record keeping and participation in actual patient care, the student shall ultimately function as the patient care leader. Students must be aware of the intensity of this course objective that requires dedication to successfully complete the total of clinical hours and patient contacts required based upon the U.S. DOT National Standard Paramedic Curriculum. Prerequisite: Successful completion of EMS courses, Basic Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and departmental approval.
