This course focuses on the development of the fantastic genre in Latin American short fiction. Readings include the works of precursors of the genre in the twentieth century such as María Luisa Bombal, Felisberto Hernández, and Horacio Quiroga; masters of the fantastic such as Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortázar; and, as examples of varied modes of the fantastic, the works of such writers as Carlos Fuentes, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Rulfo, and Gabriel García Márquez. Prerequisites: SP 305, 306.
