An applied study of issues and problems related to international economic development. Topics covered include a description of the current situation in the developing countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and their histories of growth and development. This course covers the body of theory associated with economic development, but also allows students to explore, in person, the many practical problems associated with developing countries such as poverty, population growth, urbanization, education and environment. The specific roles attributed to market forces, urbanization, state interventions, private firms and civil society organizations in alternative development strategies will be critically examined.
