3 hours A survey of music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods preceded by a brief overview of ancient Greek and Roman music and early Christian music. The course focuses on musical trends and styles, significant composers and their contributions, and the development of musical forms. The interrelatedness of music to other art forms, politics, philosophy, history, and scientific and technological advancements is also presented. (Spring semester, odd-numbered years)
