Survey of masterpieces of European literature, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, including such areas as the medieval romance and the epic, the Renaissance humanism of Rabelais and Montaigne, the Spanish Golden Age, Cervantes and Calderon de Barca and Sor Juana Innes de la Cruz, 17th-century classicism in Racine, Moliere, and Madame de Lafayette, Enlightenment literature, romanticism, realism, and symbolism in the continental poetry and fiction of the 19th century, the dramas of Chekhov and Strindberg, La Belle époque, and the early existentialism of Unamuno.
