This lecture and discussion course provides an overview of the American historical experience from the Civil War through World War II. Although specific events and leaders are included in the course, the how and why of American history is a strong focus. First, Americans struggled to recover from the devastation-political, social, and economic-of the Civil War, then the nation evolved through industrialization, urbanization, immigration, imperialism, progressivism, and two world wars while balancing society's collective needs against the various cultural and diplomatic struggles of the nation. PRQ: None. Scheduled: Every third semester in rotation with HIST 110 and 112. Meets: SNO.
