The origins and development of drama among the ancient Greeks and Romans. Study of various topics (the birth of the genre, the role of drama in ancient society, ancient theaters and staging) through the reading of ancient plays. We will consider selections from Greek tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides) and Old Comedy (Aristophanes) and discuss their influence on Roman tragic and comic playwrights. PRQ: None.
