This is an area course to familiarize students with the human diversity in the Caribbean. Topics to be discussed include the Caribbean before Columbus; the arrival of the Europeans; the introduction of African slaves; African patterns found in the Caribbean today; Caribbean marriage and kinships; voodoo, shango and other syncretic cults; Caribbean economic and political development; emigration from the Caribbean to the United States, Canada, France and Britain; independence and communism in the Caribbean.
