ART 247 - Introduction to Visual Culture

Institution:
Rockford University
Subject:
Description:
Images surround us today in all aspects of our lives. Much of what we know about the world comes from our ability to interpret, or read, images. Textbooks, magazines, newspapers, billboards, television, film, the visual arts, and the Internet all depend upon images to communicate to their audience. As such it has become increasingly important to be able to think critically and communicate about the position and role of images in our own lives and in society at large. A starting point for this course is the premise that visual images operate differently than spoken and/or written texts. This course will introduce students to what it means to be visually literate and will teach them how to think and write critically about the function, uses, and manipulation of images in our culture in a variety of fields from "high art," to the media, to advertising.
